What you will be doing

3E has developed its own wind resource modelling solution in the past years and is looking for a motivated intern to support the innovation team in the development of a validation framework. This validation framework aims to standardize and automate the workflow for evaluating uncertainty of the simulated wind resource. This will be achieved by comparing wind model chain outputs with on-site measurements in different atmospheric and site complexity to derive meaningful performance metrics. The key results should be easily interpretable by creating powerful visualisations and standard reporting. Furthermore, an analysis of these results should allow to build a link between the site complexity and the model error.

You will be part of 3E’s innovation team and will have full support and guidance from experienced researchers. The main tasks will include:

  • Add publicly available research measurements with a focus on complex sites to internal validation sites database
  • Integration of DTU’s validation framework into 3E’s validation framework,
  • Quantify the site complexity in terms of roughness and orography,
  • Linking the model errors with the site complexity,
  • Support the development of the validation framework in Python (data processing, metrics calculation, data visualisation & reporting, etc.),
  • Collaboration with leading research institutes in impactful national & European projects,
  • Contribution to the development of innovative wind resource modelling solutions.

Our ideal candidate

Our ideal candidate is:

  • Solution-oriented and practical, end-to-end minded
  • Curious, eager to learn quickly
  • Able to work in team and autonomously

Of course, there are some non-negotiables:

  • Master (or busy with Master studies) in Earth Sciences, Atmospheric Sciences, Engineering or similar
  • Strong programming skills in Python
  • Masters standard Python ecosystem for data science: Pandas, Numpy, Scipy, Xarray, Matplotlib, Seaborn, Bokeh, Plotly, etc.
  • Fluent in English (oral and written)

Bonus points for:

  • Knowledge of atmospheric modelling / meteorology / wind energy
  • familiar with meteorological time series
  • interest in data science
  • Interest in the sector of renewable energy

What we offer in return

In addition to joining a fast-growing international company that promotes a stimulating atmosphere in a highly motivated group of people, 3E offers:

  • A 6 month full-time internship (39h/week)
  • A laptop from 3E
  • Reimbursement of public transport
  • In case you come from abroad: housing allowance
  • If you are Belgian and are not currently studying: possibility for a CIP/BIS contract with according remuneration
  • Flexible working/home office.
Working fully remote is an option with a few requirements: live kick-off in our Brussels office and 1 - 2 progress meetings per week (video calls)
